Prof. Prabhakar B. Bhagwat the founder of the firm, started his life as a garden apprentice at the age of 15 , in the early 40s, at the Empress Botanical Gardens ;Pune where his father Bhalchandra V. Bhagwat was the Superintendent. With a degree in agriculture, he studied at Copenhagen and worked with C.Th. Sorenson, to then do his degree in landscape architecture under the tutelage of Prof. Brian Hackett at Newcastle University.
He then returned to India to become the Superintendent where his father had retired, and then after practicing for a few years, obtained his degree in Town Planning at IIT Kharagpur.
After joining National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad as one of the early founding faculty in 1960s, he then after a brief stint at Delhi established the firm in 1973.
For over four decades now, the firm leads in the country with a distinguished portfolio of projects in Landscape design, Environmental planning , Master planning and Architecture.
Prof. Bhagwat has in his time established the first landscape programme at Kharagpur in the 50s, led for a short period the programme at Delhi in the 70s and then established the programme at Ahmedabad in the 80s. He is the founder of the professional body of landscape architects in India (ISOLA).
The firm continues this tradition by investing significant energy in research, academics and outreach programmes that include publications, lectures and exhibitions.
