A BEACH HOUSE

“We live in a world of binaries; the existence of one is reinforced by the acknowledgement of the other. As a result, there is a constant co-existence of sometimes contradictory, and sometimes complimentary ideas that surround us. Then, there are times that we intervene to create spaces that further reinforce these binaries.”

Almost 20 years ago, the studio was commissioned with the design of a 2-bedroom beach house in Tithal, in Valsad, Gujarat. The house enters from the street, and leads one to the sea; along the movement line are the living spaces.

The interiors of the space were designed by Ms. Snehal Nagarsheth – an academician of high esteem; it was the individual elements of the space that became the studio’s focus. In working with new agencies, the process that followed was an experiment of sorts, and also perhaps some of the first inclinations towards interior design for the studio. The undertaking was predicated on capturing the outside - the beach and its elements - inside. It is of note that all elements - apart from the toilet fittings - were specifically designed for the space. The components included the lights, the hardware, the plaster, the metal, and woodwork, and the many other components.

This project became the first time that the studio collaborated with artists. This resulted in the space design incorporating photographs by a local photographer used as blinds for the glass doors.

Karl Antao created a seeming ‘coffin’ for a music system.

Subodh Kelkar – a sculptor, painter, and installation artist based in Goa – created a metallic sea creature, reinforcing the relationship between the outside and the inside.

Natural elements found along the beach, became a source of inspiration for the design of specific elements. Lights and curtains were designed to replicate the phases of the moon; telling the story of the moon.

A door became a canvas for metal letters and verses from the Rigveda, to tell the story of the ocean. Cast iron door jambs were designed.

A stone table with a water feature is also embedded with fish.

To reinforce the relationship of the inside with the outside, the bedrooms incorporate magnifying lenses that allow for a better view of the beach along which the house is located.

An aquarium with fish also pays homage to the ocean.

The landscape takes references from its surroundings. Lights designed and placed along the length of the pond attest to this.

The house has allowed for many conversations which the studio previously had not had an opportunity to engage with, not only in terms of the design of the elements, but also by the very manner and speed with which the process was executed. The outcome was a highly customized and crafted home.
