PALAVA - PRAYER HALL

“Palava is a community that has been designed to be accessible to all sections of society. It is self-reliant in all aspects - be it the idea of arts, spaces for recreation, education, transportation, housing  or even expression of faith.”

Spaces of worship have iconography associated with them; this iconography is a representation of the beliefs of the religion, and finds ties in its value system.

There is always an inherent need to develop, or find tangible associations with one’s identity and beliefs; spaces of worship allow for that. They become spaces where the ‘known’ can be found; where common ground with another is sought.

In a secular community such as Palava, multiple religious identities co-exist; each one distinct from the other. The studio has undertaken the commission of a prayer hall for a community of Palava, while staying true to the secular nature of the Palava.

While the design keeps true to the beliefs of the religion in terms of its programmatic requirements, it is an unconventional representation of a place of worship.

The construction of such spaces goes beyond the needs that they serve for the community; they are connotations of the kind community one wishes to construct; the kind of discourse one chooses to have.
