KHONI PARK

“The various parks of Palava have taken on the responsibility of not just providing spaces for recreation, but also spaces that have begun to lend a sense of identity to the city. They have been a response to the existent plant material, and to the relationship with the water bodies that surround it.”

The structure of the park has been designed as spirals, at all times edging the wetland. Ecosystems have been created within this garden such that they are conducive to bird habitation. Hedge courts have been created from which to view these birds, without disturbing them - creating hiding spaces for the viewer.

The program of the park has been designed to be a space of accessibility and recreation in more ways than one. To allow for this, it incorporates a maidan with a stage that has now become a space for all performances, celebrations, and community events that take place within the township.

The planting includes orchards, plants for butterflies, and native trees. This has led to a variation in texture and experience that the spaces allow for. This has been amplified by the plantation taken on the ground - grasses, and weeds that individuals interact with in a more tactile manner.

The choice of planting material has led to the creation of different courts - a court of fragrances, a court of colours, and a court of edible plants, amongst others. Walkways within the park lead to these courts. With the execution of Phase I finished, work on Phase II is currently underway.

Phase II
The entrance of the second phase of this park has been envisioned with a cafe. Sited on a gradient higher than the remainder of the park, this cafe will allow for a view of the entire lake. The remainder of the park has been designed around the many existing trees on the designated land. The park is intended to celebrate these trees; walkways have been created such that the visitor can experience all of these trees. Put together, the work undertaken for Phase I and Phase II takes into consideration ideas of biodiversity, recreation, and methods of interaction with land and water.
