Given the multi-faceted role of streets in the context of a city, it is also important that they are comfortable, shaded, allow cyclists to navigate, well lit, and allow for pedestrian navigation.

The scope of work has incorporated co-ordination, detailing, and guiding the overall process of infrastructure development at Palava.

The work on Road & Street Infrastructure has involved detailed off-street strategies keeping in mind accessibility, pedestrian movement & engagement, and bicycle paths. It entailed the evaluation, assessment, design, and siting of transportation facilities. The road network has been designed to allow the citizen body to move through the city with minimum delays. Flexible pavements have been used along all the roads, with electricity wires, and water pipe lines laid under them. This ensured that, for maintenance, sections of pavement blocks need only be removed and the reinstalled, without disturbing the roads.

Road crossings, opening at one end, and allowing access to the road at the other, guide pedestrian movement. Curbing has also been of significant importance in the design of the roads.

Special attention has been given to bus routes within the city keeping in mind distance between bus stops, distance from location to the nearest bus stop, and total length of the bus route; the monsoon season sees an added number of bus stops -14, to the route. Street furniture - bus-stop benches, and other seating areas – has also been incorporated into the design of the infrastructure.

Lighting is an inalienable feature of street networks; it allows for a sense of security. It is a major component that determines one’s ability to navigate a road. Since very little work is available to enable assessing public lighting parameters, a series of simulations and on-site lighting design studies were undertaken. The lighting for Palava was designed keeping in mind 1) the ability of well-designed lighting to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space; 2) energy saving that may be achieved.

The roads has become a case study in the importance of well-planned infrastructure, and the impact that it can have on one’s experience of the city and its accessibility.
