“In a time where the idea of boundaries seems to be dissolving, and cross-disciplinary propositions are thriving, what are the tools we have at our disposal to create a common ground? What are the tools that we can create to discuss ideas that seem, for so long, to have been a part of a single discipline?”

In 2017, the studio was invited to be a part of an exhibition curated by Ms. Rupali Gupte and Mr.Prasad Shetty titled ‘When Is Space?’ An effort that involved artists and architects alike, it was designed to showcase and debate the manner in which different disciplines interpret an idea. It was an effort that revisited the idea of boundaries, in both tangible and non-tangible forms - making a case for various disciplines, and aspects of life coming together.

The installation that the studio designed was the only garden installation amongst a group of about 30. It was designed with the intent of understanding how space works, and how one interacts with it.

The exhibition was hosted at the Jawahar Kala Kendra - a building designed by Charles Correa in 1992. It was designed to be a multi-arts centre with the purpose of preserving Rajasthani arts and crafts.

Initially, the objective was to create a secluded, sunken garden, with a ramp to walk on along the edge of the building.

With Himanshu Taneja’s studio – Studio HA – as local collaborators, the ultimate design incorporated the creation of a mound using debris from the site, and red-coloured soil that was already available.

The serpentine form was an extension of the form of the building; the colours a seeming negative of the facade.

The process focused on working with the ground, folding it to create a new space. It was a space for contemplation and solitude, allowing specific views of the building. It enabled a rethinking of the backyard of the Jawahar Kala Kendra.
