GARDENS FOR DIPLOMACY, AND CO-OPERATION

“History has been, and will continue to be recorded in various ways - only one of which is the written word. And then, it is recorded by how we choose to conduct ourselves, the ideas that we choose to serve, and the spaces that we create, and occupy.”

The year 2023 became the first time that India - a South Asian country - became host to the G-20 or Group of 20 Summit; a summit held annually with a rotating presidency with the intent of holding conversations that build up to a shared idea of the Global Future.

A part of this forum is the U-20 or the Urban 20 Summit. The city of Ahmedabad added another chapter in its history books by becoming the first Indian City to host this colloquium that contributes perspectives, concerns, and ideas; bringing together mayors from the cities of Member Countries.

From the outset, there was a recognition at various levels that an event such as this - an event that is an embodiment of future thinking, a renewed sense of community, and global cooperation - must be marked as such. Universally spaces have been instated to commemorate ideas of peace and harmony, diplomacy, and new beginnings and relationships.

When it came time to decide how best to honour this moment, it was decided that in Ahmedabad - where public parks have always been used as markers of time - it would be only fitting that a garden be instated.

The land chosen for this endeavour is spread over approximately 4 acres. The proposed design takes into consideration the existent features of the site - primarily a cluster of trees - as well as the concerns of the U-20 Summit.

The entrance gesture is created by an arrival plaza that leads to the Court of Coalescence - a marker of new beginnings, that speaks to ideas of unity and cohesion. One of the key elements of this space is an existing tree that is a unification of two tree typologies.

The origins of the G-20 Summit may be found in a time of turmoil; in 1999 when Asia was under-going a financial crisis. It was later elevated to the level of Heads of State and Governments in response to the global economic & financial crises - being designated as a premium forum for international economic cooperation in 2009.

And so,  one continues the journey through the ‘Walk of Remembrance’ - a trellis that is a testament to ideas of empathy, humility, and then of new beginnings finding their genesis from the remnants of that which has been lost; that which has seen collapse and destruction.

A Pavilion of Observance expands the utility of this garden beyond the immediate, creating a multipurpose space intended to instil in the space a sense of ritual.

The length of the garden has been designed such that it is edged by two ideas - those of solidity and fluidity; Earth and Water. Where the Edge of Solidity is a representation of resilience, and a commitment to better ideas of community, the Edge of Fluidity represents ideas of continuous responsiveness and evolution.

The Urban-20 Summit outlines its concerns as such - environmental responsibility, local economies and identity, governance and digital futures. The 20 Courts located within the campus of the garden are each intended to be a signifier of these tenets, along with the tangible and intangible principles that are demonstrative of the G-20 Summit. Each court is defined by a unique character, offering a unique experience.

One of the key existent features of the land is a cluster of trees. The design intends to use this feature to emphasise the ephemeral connections we share; a connected essence, and unified sense of being.

As much as this garden has been designed for the purposes of commemoration, it will ultimately become a space for the community. With this in mind, tucked away in the Northern parcel of the land is a Maidan, and a Children’s Play Area that will allow the community to claim this space as their own.

And ultimately, the space concludes with the Court of Culmination that is intended to further emphasise ideas of oneness, and cooperation; once again marked by a tree that is a comimg together of two tree typologies.

On the 9th of July 2023, Mayors and dignitaries from the Member Countries were invited to plant a tree that will become a permanent part of the plant material compostion for the garden. Each guest was also invited to provide impresssions in a clay mould that will become a part of the entry wall for the campus; these impressions were accompanied with messages commemorating the day.

Each dignitary was also requested to bring sculptures that embody the spirit of their home countries; pieces that will become a part of the garden.

Christened Sahyog Udhyan, this space demonstrates a moment in time; a space that will become a part of the community that surrounds it.
