A WEDDING LANDSCAPE

“The idea of joy and celebration can be understood, and then represented in various ways. At times it is about acquisition, at times, it is symbolic - about a sense of poetry, and imagination that surpasses the immediate.”
Landscape India Project Image 1

This is a space whose imagination started with a young couple wanting an intimate space within which to celebrate a monumental event in their lives; this was just after India had undergone a lockdown as a result of a pandemic.

And so, the studio was invited - almost cajoled - to convert a barren piece of land into a space that allowed for a renewed sense of celebration. Immediately, the studio responded to the couple’s innate sense of goodness, and empathy – values that were reflected in the design of the space within which they were to be wed.

Thus, the story began – a story that had at its core ideas of humility, sensitivity, and simplicity. It was a time-sensitive effort.

The options that were developed provided variations in how the spaces connect with one another – and hence the experiences they are able to provide.

The layout that was selected incorporated a smaller circle within - a space for the ceremony to take place; a bigger circle became the space for the reception - a space to celebrate the newlyweds.

The ground was then meticulously levelled to create a stage of mud.

Pathways were created to connect to the amenities required for such a venue - a kitchen, and rooms for the bride and the groom.

The space was then planted taking cues not only from its surroundings, but also from what is considered to be auspicious in the Indian context. These included Zea mays (Maize), Alcea rosea (Hollyhocks), Chrysanthemum morifolium (orange, white, and yellow), Cymbopogon flexuosus (Lemon Grass), Sesbania aegyptiaca, Chrysopogonzizanioides (Vetiver Grass), Bambusabambos(Bamboo), Helianthus annuus (Sunflowers), Marigold (Yellow, Orange), Amaranthus, Gajraj Grass, and Saccharum bengalense (Munj).

About a month before the ceremony was to take place, this planting began to express itself - allowing its occupants to imagine a world that has the ability to heal itself, to revive itself.

The land now stands as an embodiment of a juxtaposition – one of a grand event being held against an intimate, simple, warm space that has the ability to reaffirm one’s faith in the good, in the joyous.

It is proof of a young couple, in trying times, seeing a piece of land and imbibing within it the ability to teach lessons - lessons of nurturing relationships, of fragility, of temporality; and then, of life.
