Any one who has come to our studios, which are split over two spaces, will always remember music wafting, or blaring depending on the time of the day and the person choosing music, through-out the day. The music mostly starts by 10.00 AM in the morning and ends only at around 8.30/9.00 PM when people go home. Both spaces play different sets of music.
Its a mix of jazz, rock, sometimes but rarely classical music, Latin music, and popular Hindi music every-time a new movie has sounds that everyone likes.
This music is piped through not your hotel variety insipid speakers, but small powerful speakers that pack a punch and play in each space.
We love music- at least most of us do and the others tolerate or suffer.
Many years back, we had actually done an internal office portfolio of about 25 to 30 projects and selected the corresponding music for it; the exercise was to select music that best carried the emotion of the projects- and the selection much like our work was wide and varied. Not for us is the boredom and the restriction of one kind of music- we like all types much as our work exuberantly explores many genres and languages. Those reading this, will note that I am making a case for designers to work with a variety of languages and genres, and not be stifled into dedicating their life , for unknown reasons, to a singular material or a spatial philosophy or a design language.
A few weeks back we gave a lecture in a conference that linked seven projects to music . The applause and appreciation was huge, and much of it I suspect because people liked the music !
Do find below the selection of the music , with the names of the projects it was linked with. I hope you enjoy it.
On another note, one of the other speakers in the conference rather grumpily objected to architects who speak less, and use music to show their work.
What would you prefer ? Designers who go on and on, finding the most obscure adjectives repeated ad-nauseam, to sing praises of self, or work shown as it is, with no fan fare, set to good music ? You decide. And in the meanwhile , do hear the music.
