DHUN - A WAY OF LIVING

“The year 2020 was plagued by a Global Pandemic - one whose ramifications we will continue to see for many years to come. Amongst its other impacts on ideas of healthcare, ideas of recreation, and of community - it has tangibly impacted our relationship with land, and our idea of nature, and leisure. Underlying these changes is a new found empathy for natural resources, and the many connections that we continue to establish with wilderness, and the land.”

This conversation began a few years ago with a patron who was determined to transform a land that his family held near Jaipur. At the beginning of this journey, it was a land that was degenerated; one that had no water, and was essentially a dry, saline expanse. It was home to less than 30 trees.

The intent was singular - to convert this land into one that allowed for the development of a completely self-sustaining community; a space that would work towards defining a new approach to development in the times to come. A case-study in progress, it has the potential to reimagine urban planning, while challenging preconceived notions of capitalism, and abundance. This vision has been sometime in the making, with the design model itself being a collaborative one.

Spread over 500 acres, the land has been envisioned as a microcosm for recreation, working, and the relationships that we witness every day. Having shaped the conversation to allow for their ideas of sustenance and community learning, the patron approached the studio to undertake the master-planning of the land in question.

The process began with undertaking studies that led to a detailed understanding of the land - its textures, sounds, natural landmarks, biodiversity, and the various ecosystems it allows for. These studies informed the approach to sustainability that the land would allow for.

The next step was to develop a holistic definition of the term ‘sustainability’ - especially given the many elements it encompasses. Studies were undertaken to determine what the development of the land would look like if the idea was restricted to water, or food.

And then, it necessitated an understanding of land use patterns. Calculations were also undertaken for energy consumption - accounting for a varied number of individuals that would make up the community.

Studies were undertaken to look at form and massing; studies that explored various ideas of community - studies supported by statistics and calculations that determined maximum occupancy, and efficiency with reference to the land.

The options developed demonstrated living along the water, fragmented living, single living, and living within community forests.

It is an on-going, complex process, that has required many minds to come together. The need of the hour now is to concretise the many efforts; with the studio - invited at a critical juncture - guiding the process, and attempting to recalibrate an extremely nuanced and layered idea.

It is a world within a world that is seeking to redefine ideas of benefit, knowledge, and understanding - all while allowing the land to express its own potential. The studio is focused on designing processes and facilitating conversations that will allow for the accomplishment of the vision that the patron has held over many years.
