Cities have often been referred to as engines of growth, playing a crucial role in ensuring a nation’s status within the global context. It has become increasingly important to assess the way cities are designed, and to ensure that they are conducive not only to these ideas of growth and development, but also to ideas of community, and standards of living.

In the Upper Thane area of Mumbai - along the Mumbai - Nashik Expressway - the Studio was invited to envision, and plan the development of a township which is spread over an area of approximately 350 acres. It includes mass housing, and then also some villas, with garden entrances that seem to play homage to a different sense of living.

Much like in the case of Palava, ideas of quality of life, maintainability, infrastructure and service deployment, mass-housing, and spaces for community building have been given a premium. This has necessitated that the idea of design be looked at with a new sense of energy and understanding.

Partly occupied, the development currently includes a football and cricket ground, along with facilities for other forms of sports.

The housing courtyards are surrounded by mass-housing, and function as extensions to the homes with sheltered seating spaces, and also provide the township with a sense of identity.

A club house in the township serves as a gathering space for the community. The township also includes a pool.

The roads and streets within the township are edged by dense organized soft landscapes that, at regular intervals, are interspersed seamlessly within the hard landscape.

As this township develops, it will continue to incorporate within its ideas of living, and maintainability, while addressing the challenges that are associated with the development of urbanity in the country.
