PLANNING A TOWN

“There are distinct differences in the facilities and infrastructure that are offered in a city, versus those that are offered in peri-urban regions. They have been nearly 8 decades in the making; almost since the time of Indian independence. The current reality is that such regions lag far behind the Indian city in terms of income, infrastructure, employment opportunities, governance, and facilities that improve one's lifestyle.”

The issues associated with development are ever evolving and there needs to be an acknowledgement of the fact that the ‘one size fits all’ approach will not work.

Shirpur, in Dhule district of Maharashtra, at present has a population of approximately 80,000 people; when the project initially began, the population was approximately that of 15,000 individuals. The primary source of income is agriculture. The development of this town is an attestation to  Mr. Amrish Patel and Late Mr. Mukesh Patel’s motivation, and belief. The difference here lay in the vision; there was no cutting of corners. The intent was never incremental development; rather exponential, and impactful development.

The plans incorporated colleges, hospitals, sewage treatment plants, banking systems, and the establishment of a comprehensive municipal council. It is the result of the private and public working together; a significant amount of the development was undertaken by appropriately utilizing government funds, and schemes.

Apart from this, there was a focus on the development of roads, a chowpati, an airstrip, and refinery, amongst other amenities and services.

For a decade and a half, the studio was involved in the resurgence of Shirpur. A significant number of projects that the studio undertakes involve complex design interventions.

In the case of Shirpur, however, it was about lending dignity to the space using the limited, resources that were available. In so doing, landscape was undertaken for the gardens, public parks, hospitals, schools, colleges, main roads, and urban forestry, amongst other spaces. The main focus was creating sensible, easily manageable spaces.

At all times, the decisions and interventions involved in the process of development have been easy to execute, and easy to adapt. It has only required appropriate goal setting, and management.

The transformation of Shirpur, in comparison to its surrounding areas, has rightfully earned it the title of Jannat.
