A HOUSE OF COURTS

“Can one create spaces of oppositions - spaces that continuously allow one to confront the paradoxes that we create regularly, and the parallel narratives within which we exist?”

Landscape India Project Image 1

This is a weekend home for a young couple. The land sits within a factory campus, as a result of which the primary concern of the design became creating a sense of privacy. The first thing the design ensured that the land in question was sunken to not only allow for privacy, but also to reduce the impact of noise pollution.

The iterations of this second home looked at manners in which to almost slow down time - working with multiple architectural languages, edge conditions, and the manners in which the edge conditions are addressed, and also the connections that are made between the landscapes and the built.

While initially the land dedicated to this endeavour measured approximately 1.5 acres, the connections it made with the factory, and the need to allow for a sense of privacy led to an alteration of the site boundary, altering the land in question to approximately 4,500 sq. meters.

As part of the process of design, the manners in which the land was to be occupied were also explored. The first iteration looked at exploring the idea of cascading gardens, the second was a house of walls, and the third was a house where the courtyards became the spaces around which the built was woven. All these options had implications on circulation, the relationships between the built and the open, the amount of space allocated to gardens and courts, and where they found themselves within the context of the house. Ultimately, it was the house with the courtyards that was taken forward.

The program now includes an entrance court, and pavilion, a temple, a deck on water and a swimming pool, and a garden path. It also includes a kitchen, a formal dining space, and a Master Bedroom.

The young couple is social - and is intent on using this home as a space to entertain. They wanted a space that would allow them a sense of living together. Thus, the program has also been designed to include a space that may allow for a joint living arrangement, while also simultaneously offering a sense of privacy. The program also includes a tennis court. All through, spaces of pause and respite have been woven seamlessly within the built - at times in the form of a Trellis Court, and at others, in the form of bodies of water.

The built expresses itself in different forms, allowing different spatial experiences. Some spaces express themselves as fluid, and organic, while others become more structured and formal in their proclamation.

In yet others, they become pronouncements, and markers - integrated with the natural, making connections with water, and seating spaces - navigating between ideas of the private, and the public.

It is a space that plays with ideas of mass and voids, privacy and expanses, courts within spaces, and spaces within courts
